10-year Guyanese passport launched with electronic features

Guyanese can now obtain an ultra-modern passport which is valid for 10 years and fortified with electronic security features.

The Ministry of Home Affairs on Monday announced the official launch of the new passport and said the document ensures an easier and safer travelling experience.

Starting February 10, 2025, applicants can choose between a $6,000 passport which is valid for five years and the technologically advanced 10-year passport for $12,000 when visiting the Central Immigration and Passport Office.

Applicants who submitted on or before Friday, February 7, 2025, will receive the older passport while those who applied from February 10 onward will receive the new travel document.

The new passport is an example of President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali’s efforts to create a modern Guyana where citizens can benefit from the country’s rapid digital transformation and enhanced service delivery.

It has enhanced security features like an embedded electronic chip to improve identity protection and verification.

The new system incorporates an enhanced data collection process that requires all applicants to undergo biometric enrollment such as fingerprinting.

These upgraded features align with international standards for secure travel documents, guaranteeing users smoother passages at borders worldwide.

The passport is equally beautiful as it is innovative. Complete with a creative and colourful style, the passport’s design personifies the government’s “One Guyana” theme of cultural celebration and togetherness.

The Central Immigration and Passport Office is currently reviewing the process of replacing lost or damaged passports. In the interim, the existing policy process remains effective.

Efforts are also underway to introduce an online application system where applicants can apply remotely rather than tediously waiting in long lines to apply manually.

The Ministry of Home Affairs encourages citizens to refer to its social media platforms for further updates and detailed information regarding the new passport and upcoming online platform.
